Free Technology (you get what you pay for)

Day_2

Cell phone service across Northern AZ leaves a bit to be desired...
The Google Latitude feed from my cellphone that feeds the Spotwalla map apparently took a vacation without us this afternoon. It did ok until we got to Tuba City, and then it decided to go south while we went east. At least we both wound up in the same place. The 324 mile route we actual took is pictured above.

Route 264 from Tuba City down toward Gallup is a nice, two-lane road with little traffic. Mostly 65 mph speed limits with few stops and little traffic. Little civilization. Little food, gas, or lodging. Lots of rocks and sand, some vegetation. Sporadic clusters of mobile homes and small houses. Not exactly the high-rent district, but a nice, scenic drive with many amazing panoramic views. Tuba City is about 4500 feet elevation, and this route staggers its way up and down to about 7600 feet before settling down to about 6500 in Gallup. Like I say, destinations are over-rated -- it's how you get there that counts! (No offense to those of you at our various destinations :)

A few light showers this afternoon, but nothing that mattered. The first shower was strange though -- we probably only got hit by about a hundred rain drops, but each one must have been the size of a marble. It felt and sounded like hail. Comfortable temperatures today, mostly between about 50 and 70.

Day 1 - Recap

We're wrapping up day one of our motorcycle trip! I'm ready to hit the
sack, but I'll do a quick recap! (I apologize ahead of time if this
recap isn't "quick".. I'm not known for being vague when it comes to
telling stories!)

- We left the house this morning around 10. There was pretty much no
traffic on the way, which was awesome! I was shocked, since it is the
Saturday of a holiday weekend!

- We got gas twice.

- Drove a total of 430 miles.

- Hit 12 different highways/freeways

- Drove in California, Nevada, and Arizona.

- There is some pretty intense wind activity on the trip so far! Major
cross winds. You would never notice it in a car, but you really do on
a bike! I wanted to fly a kite afterwards..

- Learned that Laughlin, NV is pretty much a sad attempt at Vegas. And
that the best part of that city was the view from the top of a hill,
looking into Arizona!

- Learned that in Arizona, you don't have to wear a helmet on a
motorcycle (don't worry, we still did!).

- Observed some "art with rocks" on the side of the road.. And that
people don't get very creative - "M + T" inside a heart, or their
name..

- Noticed that mountains in Arizona and Nevada look very different
than our California mountains - way more jagged!

- Learned (by feeling) that it gets very cold as you get closer to
the Grand Canyon. It started to. drop by 5° at a time in the last hour
or so.

- The hotel we're staying at," The Grand Canyon Hotel" claims to be
the oldest hotel here - it opened in 1891.

- We had dinner at this diner called... Country pine Restaurant... or
Pine Country... I can't remember. It was pretty good - and they had
yummy pie!

- We're now in for the night in our cute little room. Some of the
other rooms have to share a bathroom, we get our own though..

Thanks for keeping us in your prayers! So far there's been no bike
problems, health problems, or sanity problems :)

Also, after looking at our SpotWalla once we got in tonight, it looks
like it had a few glitches! Point #17 shows us hopping over to Big
Bear - that didn't happen. Apparently SpotWalla wanted us there! And
then it aso had a hiccup at Point #42 and #44.. We stayed on the 40
the whole time.. Other than that, it's pretty accurate!

Stay tuned for more pictures and posts!
